I was stationed in Simsbury/Avon Ct as a cook from 1957-1959 also in Ft Hancock in 1956 and did basic in Ft. Dix Nj in 1956. Would like to hear from anyone who served in Avon in the same time period. "you don't know, do you?" John Regan Jr.

I was a little kid (Fairfield, CT) in 1956. I remember being taken on a guided tour of the "Nike Site" - which included a a walk around the interior of a "Globemaster" military transport aircraft. How many of us were actually Russian spies - I don't know ;o)

My father worked at Canel in 1960 after he got out of the Air Force. He said he was a rig operator of some sorts? I was born in 1962 in Middletown and18 months after I was born he moved us back Sandy Oregon where he was raised as a child on the flanks of Mt. Hood. I just recently found out he had worked there. It sounds like the kind of secret covert place that a Cold War era movie could be made. I had to find out more info. So I found this site on the web. I would love to learn more of the history of Canel but my dads memory is starting to fade.

I was stationed at HA 85 Avon/Simsbury from late 1959 until the spring of 1961. My memories include plowing snow and plowing more snow. We kept the road open to the radar on top of Talcott Mountain. I also remember ice skating on a pond in Avon. Most of the men I was stationed with were local. but a few were from out of state.
