Around 1961 the government set up a â??modelâ?? fallout shelter at Bishops Corner in West Hartford, and opened it to the public for inspection tours. I remember riding my bicycle there and waiting in line as couples would walk out, with the wives usually hysterical. I, on the other hand, found the sight of a shelter with a hand-cranked air ventilator, emergency food and sanitation kits, and Geiger counters to be the neatest thing I had ever seen. I also enjoyed the â??duck and coverâ? exercises in school around that time.

I remember walking in the woods in Ansonia from the Nature center, during the 1980s and 1990s and coming across the site. Ever since then I was so interested in the history.
